Forensic Science Basics word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this forensic science puzzle set for my 4th and 5th graders during our crime scene investigation unit. The kids were obsessed with the idea of being detectives and solving mysteries, but they had no idea what words like crime scene, evidence, or witness actually meant in a scientific context . They also kept mixing up all the different jobs—who collects the evidence, who analyzes it, and who testifies in court . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using foundational terms like forensic science, suspect, victim, witness, physical evidence, trace evidence, chain of custody, fingerprints, ballistics, DNA, serology, autopsy, toxicology, investigation, interview, and crime lab . I also threw in a few key roles like CSI, forensic scientist, and medical examiner because they kept asking who does what at a crime scene . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick and to show them that forensic science is a real career path .

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "toxicology" or whether a forensic scientist and a CSI are the same thing (they're not — CSI collects evidence, the forensic scientist analyzes it in the lab) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review after we've done a mock crime scene investigation in class . I added a couple simple magnifying glass, fingerprint, and beaker drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one forensic job from the puzzles and write what they do on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
