Grade 1 CVC Word Families word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this CVC word families puzzle set for my 1st graders during our phonics unit. The kids were learning to sound out simple three-letter words, but they kept mixing up word families like -at and -an or -ig and -ip, especially when they had to read them in isolation. They needed extra practice to see the patterns across words like cat, bat, and hat. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words from key CVC families like -at (cat, bat, hat, rat), -an (can, fan, man, pan), -ig (pig, wig, dig, big), -op (top, mop, hop, pop), -ug (bug, hug, mug, rug), -en (hen, pen, ten, men), and -in (pin, fin, win, bin). I also added a few like "dog" and "log" from the -og family because they fit the pattern and the kids always ask about them . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the reading patterns finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether "bat" and "cat" are in the same family (they are — both -at) and whether "dog" and "log" are a family too (they are — both -og) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I always have a set of picture cards nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the word and the picture together . I added a couple simple cat, dog, and bat drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for K through 2nd grade, especially for kids who need that extra visual cue . Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word family and write as many words as they can from that family on the back . The kids actually ask for these now.
