Grade 2 Animal Habitats word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this measurement puzzle set for my 2nd graders during our math unit. The kids could use a ruler but kept mixing up words like inch, foot, and yard, and had no idea what words like length, width, or height meant when we started measuring objects in the classroom. They also couldn't tell the difference between "longer" and "taller." So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using measurement words like length, height, width, inch, foot, yard, centimeter, ruler, yardstick, measure, compare, longer, shorter, taller, and estimate. I also threw in a few like "tape measure" and "weight" because they kept coming up when we measured things around the room . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "centimeter" or whether a foot is longer than a yard (it's not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a ruler and a yardstick nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the difference between the units . I added a couple simple ruler, pencil, and book drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 2nd through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers measure something in the room and write the measurement on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
