Grade 2 Life Cycles word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this life cycles puzzle set for my 2nd graders during our life science unit. The kids knew about butterflies and frogs from earlier grades, but they had no idea what words like metamorphosis, larva, or pupa meant when we started talking about the different stages of life cycles. They also kept mixing up the order of the stages. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like life cycle, egg, larva, pupa, adult, metamorphosis, caterpillar, butterfly, tadpole, frog, seed, sprout, and seedling . I also made sure to include "life cycle" itself because it's the key concept for the whole unit . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "metamorphosis" (it's a long one) or whether a tadpole is the same as a larva (they're both life stages, but they're for different animals) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have life cycle diagrams nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the sequence of stages . I added a couple simple caterpillar, frog, and plant drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 2nd through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw a life cycle of an animal or plant and label its stages on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
