Grade 2 Money Math word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this money math puzzle set for my 2nd graders during our math unit. The kids could identify pennies and nickels, but they had no idea what words like dime, quarter, or dollar meant when we started counting mixed coins and making change. They also kept mixing up the value of a dime and a nickel because the dime is smaller but worth more. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar, cent, value, count, and change . I also threw in a few like "spend," "save," and "buy" because they kept coming up when we talked about what money is for . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "quarter" or whether a dime is worth more than a nickel (it is, but the kids always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have real coins or a coin chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the size and value differences . I added a couple simple penny, nickel, dime, and quarter drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 2nd through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw three ways to make 25 cents on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
