Grade 3 Native Americans word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this Native Americans puzzle set for my 3rd graders during our social studies unit. The kids knew the word "Indian" but had no idea about different tribes or that the environment shaped how each group lived. They kept mixing up which tribe lived where and what homes they built. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like tribe, region, Woodlands, Plains, Southwest, hunter, farmer, wigwam, tipi, pueblo, longhouse, and culture. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "Iroquois" or whether a tipi and a wigwam are the same thing (they're not — tipis were used on the Plains, wigwams in the Northeast). The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple tipi and longhouse drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one tribe and write one fact about their homes or food on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
