Grade 3 Parts of Speech word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this parts of speech puzzle set for my 3rd graders during our grammar unit. The kids could use words correctly in sentences but had no idea what nouns, verbs, or adjectives were called or what the difference was between them. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, interjection, article, and part of speech . I also threw in a few examples like "happy" (adjective), "run" (verb), "slowly" (adverb), and "dog" (noun) so they could see the words in context . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "conjunction" (it's a tricky one) or whether "run" is always a verb (it's not—they always have opinions about it when we talk about how "run" can be a noun in "a run in my stocking") . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a parts of speech anchor chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the definitions and examples . I added a couple simple labels like "noun" and "verb" on drawings of a person and an action but nothing too busy.
Works for 3rd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a sentence and label the parts of speech on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
