Grade 4 Landforms word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this landforms puzzle set for my 4th graders during our geography unit. The kids could identify a hill and a river, but they had no idea what words like plateau, canyon, or delta meant when we started reading about different landforms. They also kept mixing up "mountain" and "hill." So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like mountain, valley, plateau, plain, hill, canyon, desert, island, peninsula, coast, delta, river, lake, ocean, volcano, and cave. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "peninsula" or whether a plateau is higher than a mountain (it's not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have pictures of each landform nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the difference between them . I added a couple simple mountain, river, and island drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick three landforms and draw a tiny landscape on the back, labeling each one. The kids actually ask for these now.
