Grade 4 States of Matter word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this states of matter puzzle set for my 4th graders during our physical science unit. The kids knew ice, water, and steam, but they had no idea what words like solid, liquid, gas, or matter meant when we started learning about the states. They also kept mixing up the terms for changes of state like melting and freezing. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like matter, solid, liquid, gas, plasma, melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, deposition, particles, molecule, and energy . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "condensation" or whether plasma is a real state of matter or something from science fiction . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a states of matter diagram or examples of each state nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the particle arrangements . I added a couple simple ice cube, water drop, and steam cloud drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw the particle arrangement for a solid, liquid, and gas on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
