Grade 6 Ratio Learning Activities | Autumn Theme

If you’re looking for a set of hands-on activities to supplement your math curriculum, look no further. Your 6th graders are going to enjoy engaging with one another while strengthening their understanding of ratios. You’ll love the move away from traditional textbook assignments and providing your learners with alternative math activities. This product is great for classroom teachers, homeschool parents, co-op leaders, or resource teachers. Each activity can be modified to best meet the needs of your learners. Additionally, they promote core STEM concepts including collaboration, engineering, technology, and critical thinking. As learners work to analyze data and present their findings, they will focus on writing different ratio formats, ratio tables, ratio word problems, tape diagrams, and ratio number lines. All of this is enhanced with fun Autumn themes such as leaves, apple pie, candy, football, Veterans Day, and various woodland creatures. For each activity you will find detailed instructions that include the activity objective, as well as the corresponding mathematics standard(s). All picture cards and most worksheets are available in color and b&w versions. An answer key is provided for all activities. If you choose to print/copy the picture cards on cardstock and laminate them, you’ll have engaging activities for year-over-year use. Other than the initial printing and cutting out of cards, there is very little prep work to be done on your part. For both activities that require presentations, detailed instructions and check-off lists are included to keep learners organized and promote self-sufficiency. Each activity is outlined below to give you a better idea of what this product includes.

ACTIVITY 1: RATIO TEAMWORK – learners will work in pairs or small groups to determine the ratio of given pictorial data via 10 PowerPoint slides. They will write their answers in the (#:#) and fraction formats.

ACTIVITY 2: RATIO WORD PROBLEMS – learners will travel between 4 designated centers and gather data presented on picture cards. Then, they will solve 4 ratio word problems using ratio tables on the provided worksheet.

ACTIVITY 3: TAPE DIAGRAM DESIGN – learners will work in pairs or small groups to analyze given pictorial data, write a word problem for said data, design a corresponding tape diagram, and present their findings to classmates.

ACTIVITY 4:AUTUMN NUMBER LINES – learners will work in small groups to analyze presented ratio data. Then they will collaborate to create a PowerPoint or Google slide showing parallel number lines that include the provided data. Upon slide completion, learners will present their assignment to classmates who will work to present an answer for the question generated by the group.
