Grade 8 Argumentative Writing Deep Dive word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this argumentative writing deep dive puzzle set for my 8th graders during our writing unit. The kids could write a basic argument, but they kept mixing up the parts of an argument, especially the difference between a claim and a thesis, and they didn't know how to organize a counterargument paragraph. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like claim, thesis, evidence, reasoning, counterargument, rebuttal, concession, refutation, support, credible, source, audience, tone, transition, conclusion, and call to action . I also threw in a few like "logical fallacy" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "counterargument" (it's a long one) or whether a rebuttal and a concession are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have an argumentative writing outline or anchor chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the structure of an argument essay . I added a couple simple scale and speech bubble drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 8th through 9th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers write a claim about a current topic and one piece of evidence to support it on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
