About this resource
What's inside this resource
These how to round posters give students a clear model for rounding whole numbers to any place from tens to millions. Six posters each focus on a single place: nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand and million. Every poster works one example two ways. A number line shows which multiple is closer and where the halfway mark sits, and a place-value box names the target digit, the digit to its right and what to do next. A halfway box on each poster shows the round-up rule with its own example, such as 75 rounding to 80.
The final poster, "Choose the Place," rounds one number, 8,364,725, to all six places in a table and reminds students to start from the original number each time rather than rounding an answer again.
- Grades 2–5: place value and rounding, with posters that fit a range of levels
- Seven pages: six single-place posters and one summary reference
- Print options: a full-color PDF and a print-friendly black and white PDF

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Use a number line to decide which multiple of a place value a number is closer to.
Identify the target digit and the digit to its right when rounding.
Apply the halfway rule: whole numbers exactly halfway round up.
Teaching tips
Display only the posters that match your grade level, such as tens and hundreds in grade 3 and up to millions in grades 4–5.
Cover the rounded value on a poster and have students predict it from the number line before revealing it.
Point out the regrouping in the halfway examples, such as 950 rounding to 1,000 and 95,000 to 100,000.
Skills covered
Number line reasoning: students locate a number between two multiples and compare its position with the halfway mark.
Place value: students name the digit in the target place and read the digit just to its right.
Rounding rules: students keep the target digit for 0–4, add 1 for 5–9 and change later digits to zeros.
