About This Product

A complete ten-day theme unit for IB Spanish B that teaches the theme Experiences (holidays and travel, leisure activities, life stories, rites of passage, customs and traditions) and trains the assessments inside it: Paper 1 writing, Paper 2 listening and reading, and the individual oral. Standard Level and Higher Level in one product, with one build: same texts, same arc, with HL extension layers flagged in gold throughout.

EVERYTHING IS ORIGINAL TO THIS UNIT. All three readings and all three listening texts were written and recorded for this unit. Nothing comes from past papers or from any other product, and none of the unit's texts is reused in any exam product.

THE READINGS (Paper 2 formats: multiple choice in the minority, short answer, matching, true/false with text justification, gap-fill summary, find the phrase)

- Reading A, "Viajar despacio: el tren de Carmen" (report, Spain): a retired nurse finally takes the slow train journey she dreamed of at twenty, across the green north coast. Ships at two lengths on one spine: 544 words at SL, 729 at HL, the HL paragraphs adding new information (the slow tourism debate), never padding. 12 questions, the last 4 flagged HL.

- Reading B, "La quinceañera de Jimena" (chronicle, Mexico, 523 words): a fifteenth-birthday celebration in Oaxaca that keeps the rite and negotiates every piece of it, from the waltz in sneakers to the last doll given away. 11 questions.

- Reading C, "El primer camino de Marta" (personal narrative, Spain, 470 words): a seventeen-year-old walks the Camino de Santiago with her seventy-nine-year-old grandfather, who first walked it with his own father. 10 questions.

THE LISTENING SET (original narrated audio, each text heard twice in the exam pattern)

- Listening 1, "Rutas y Raíces" (podcast interview, Colombia): the director of a Barranquilla carnival comparsa on a celebration that takes a whole year to prepare. 9 questions.

- Listening 2, "Viajes con Memoria" (narrated report, Guatemala): young travelers cross the country recording the life stories of older people before those stories are lost. 9 questions, and the unit check re-tests this text with new questions.

- Listening 3, "Los ochenta años de la abuela" (conversation, Puerto Rico, with the Caribbean features of the variety labeled where they appear): two cousins plan a surprise eightieth-birthday trip for their grandmother. 9 questions.

Full transcripts live in the answer keys and the teacher guide, never in student materials.

PAPER 1 TASK BANK

Three tasks on the theme (a phone-free summer camp; the end-of-course trip vote; my town's festival told from inside), each printed in an SL variant (250-400 words) and an HL variant (450-600 words with an added demand: an objection to answer, survey data to integrate, or a second audience). Text types offered across the bank: blog or diary entry, article, leaflet, proposal, formal letter or email, speech, news report, review. Planning organizer per task, and TWO annotated model responses (one SL, one HL) annotated for Language, Message, and Conceptual understanding in our own words.

INDIVIDUAL ORAL STIMULUS SET

10 real photographs (Wikimedia Commons, credits and licenses printed in the packet) in the theme's five clusters (travel and holidays, outdoor leisure, life stories, rites of passage, customs and traditions), each with an observe-interpret-connect presentation scaffold, a five-question discussion ladder (the last two questions are the HL rung), and a share of the unit's 20-question general conversation bank. An honest HL note page explains that the HL oral runs on a literary extract from the works studied in class, which this product does not supply, and how the photos serve the discussion and conversation parts.

VOCABULARY ARCHITECTURE

An 80-word bank in five topic sections with English glosses and an example sentence per entry. 23 entries (29 percent) are gold-flagged HL. The bank's core comes from the term list of Unit 4 of this same store's AP Spanish Thematic Vocabulary product (terms only; its readings are never reused), and no entry repeats any of Unit 1's 80 words. This unit's 80 words are Section 2 of the line's planned 400-word architecture across the five theme units.

THE UNIT CHECK (one verified master, four versions)

40 multiple choice items: 12 on a NEW reading text ("Una maleta, tres generaciones," 445 words), 10 listening items on Listening 2 with new questions, 10 vocabulary-in-context items, and items 33-40 as a flagged HL extension block, reported as an extension tally out of 8, never as a level score (eight items cannot carry one, and no version pretends otherwise). Key audited for balance and patterns (10/10/10/10, longest run 2, keyed-longest 17.5 percent). Ships as: printable PDF, self-grading Google Forms (copy link; the master carries anyone-with-link writer permission so your copy opens), Canvas QTI (import route printed: New Quiz > Build > More Quiz Actions > Import Content), and a games-format review.

ALSO INSIDE

Crossword (24 definition clues), word search (20 words, definition clues, no printed word list), bingo (30 cards and a full call list with definitions, HL words marked), an 18-page teacher guide with day-by-day costed pacing (a 50-minute core inside 65-75 minutes of material per day), SL/HL differentiation notes, administration notes, and misconceptions per task; a bilingual family letter (English and Spanish); an editable .docx version of the student packet; and a narrated slide deck (59 slides, PowerPoint plus PDF render) with the listening audio embedded, one control per listening slide.

GOOGLE SLIDES NOTE: Slides' importer drops audio embedded in .pptx files, for any publisher. The standalone Audio folder is included for exactly this: upload it to Drive and use Insert > Audio. The guide and intro packet print the steps.

The course's proficiency band is approximately CEFR B1-B2 at SL and B2-C1 at HL (ACTFL roughly Intermediate High-Advanced at SL, Advanced at HL). These equivalences are professional approximations; the IB does not publish CEFR or ACTFL conversions.

Formats: PowerPoint (.pptx) + PDF render, printable PDFs, editable .docx, MP3 audio, Google Forms, Canvas QTI.
