Outer Space Counting Mini Book, Worksheets & Activities

Take your young learners on an out-of-this-world adventure with these space themed activities. Your kiddos in Pre-K and kindergarten will begin their journey with a fun, fact-filled read-along where Sophia teaches her younger brother Liam all about different objects in space. Through the lens of his telescope, Liam counts various objects he sees far beyond the atmosphere. The story concludes with your learners counting backwards from 10 to 1 with a grand finale, BLAST OFF! The book was designed using pre-primer and primer sight words, along with repetition. Both will help your emerging readers build confidence in their reading skills. Next on their journey, learners will strengthen their math and ela skills by completing tasks focusing on counting, sequencing, 1-to-1 correspondence, reading comprehension, and opinion writing. Along the way they will be given several opportunities to work on fine motor skills through cutting, gluing, tracing, finger painting, manipulating dough, and pinching small amount of glitter. To promote STEM activities, your learners will work to design and build a rocket that matches the height of pre-determined objects in your educational environment. Finally, to round out the unit, your learners will get to create their very own asteroid. They will be the talk of the school and a fun memory for your learners to recall throughout life. “When I was younger, I had my very own asteroid!” What a great conversation starter or springboard for writing. The mini book and many of the worksheets are available in a color version. If laminated, the color version can easily become a write-on/wipe-off activity. All story pages, worksheets, and activities are available in a b&w version. To save you time, all worksheets are designed as print and go. While prep work is required for the activities, you’ll find it well worth it to see your learners’ faces light up with delight. An answer key is provided for most worksheets. BOOK: BLAST OFF!: A counting journey through space (14 pages)

WORKSHEETS:

1 & 2 – learners will count the number of craters on each moon and trace/write the corresponding numbers.

3 – learners will identify, trace, and draw three shapes associated with phases of the moon (crescent, semi-circle, full circle)

4 – learners will identify the numbers in each rocket window and fill in the missing numbers in each sequence.

5 – learners will identify the numbers in each rocket window and color the corresponding number of astronauts in each column.

6 – learners will identify and color the comets based on comparison of size

7 – learners will identify the given number and cross out 1 of 2 moons that does not show the same number of craters.

8 – learners will count the planets in each box and color the sun with the corresponding number.

9 – learners will count the asteroids in each scientists’ box and write the corresponding number on the line.

10 – learners will color the stars containing numbers to show the countdown path the astronaut will take to the space shuttle.

11 – learners will complete the writing prompt about a shooting star and illustrate their writing.

12 – learners will answer a question using “yes” or “no” and provide one opinion to support their answer.

13 – learners will draw a picture of an alien family and write the number of family members in the star.

14 – learners will answer 5 reading comprehension questions about the story, BLAST OFF!

15 – learners will draw lines to match the space graphics to their shadows

16 – leaners will complete the dot-to-dot (star-to-star) and identify the constellation it created.

ACTIVITIES:

1 – learners will decorate the tallest volcano on Mars (Olympus Mons) and fingerpaint 10 drops of lava shooting out of it.

2 – learners will create comet heads out of modeling dough, attach them to the comet tails, and sequence the comets based on order of length.

3 – learners will take a number card, identify the number, and using a marble, make the corresponding number of craters on their moon dough moon sculpture.

4 – learners will trace the rings of Saturn with a crayon and decorate the planet using colored paint ice cubes.

5 – learners will search for an asteroid rock of their choosing and then paint and decorate it for a result that is out of this world.

6 – learners will use STEM techniques to design and build a rocket.

7 – learners will create 1 or 2 constellations, name them, and write the total number of stars they contain.
