Primary and Secondary Colors word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this primary and secondary colors puzzle set for my 1st and 2nd graders during our art unit. The kids could name red, blue, and yellow but had no idea they could mix them to make new colors. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like red, blue, yellow, primary, green, orange, purple, secondary, mix, blend, color wheel, paint, and rainbow. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the color mixing concept finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether mixing red and blue makes purple. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple paint palette, brush, and color circle drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 1st through 3rd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers name what red and yellow make on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
