About This Product
Give students a clear reason for choosing a word or including a detail. This descriptive writing workshop helps fourth- and fifth-grade writers shape accurate, connected descriptions for a reader instead of simply adding adjectives or listing every sense.
Six linked sequences move from useful word choices to increasingly independent writing. Students consider precise language, actions and verbs, relevant sensory details, a clear route through a setting, whole-passage revision, and a final plan-draft-revise brief. Complete models and worked contrasts make the decisions visible before students try them themselves.
All required detail banks, labeled setting plans, source information, response pages, and writing prompts are provided. Across 30 tasks, students compare options, develop passages, explain omissions, organize details, and justify revisions. They do not need to bring photographs, describe their own home, or search for information online.
The first five sequences work from supplied facts so students can distinguish an accurate description from an invented feature. The final brief permits one compatible invented detail, identified during planning. Writers can make choices while keeping task boundaries and marking criteria clear.
Teacher guidance supports modeling, copying, oral rehearsal, partner feedback, and self-review. Reasoned illustrative answers explain possible choices, while flexible criteria accommodate other valid writing. The resource is intended for US grades 4-5 students who can write connected simple sentences and use a short fact bank. Teacher reading or dictated responses can support the writing decisions.
The download provides a complete 37-page PDF and a separate 27-page student PDF in both US Letter and A4: four noneditable printable files with the same American English content. Teacher guidance and answer keys are included in each complete resource. Teachers can divide the six progression sequences across class sessions as appropriate.
