Space Rocks Asteroids and Comets word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this space rocks puzzle set for my 4th graders during our space unit. The kids could name a few things like the sun and planets, but they had no idea what words like asteroid, comet, or meteor meant, or the difference between them. They kept mixing up which one burned up in the atmosphere and which one had a tail. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like asteroid, comet, meteor, meteoroid, meteorite, tail, nucleus, orbit, crater, sun, gravity, impact, debris, and rock. I also added a few like "Chelyabinsk" and "Jupiter" because they came up in our conversations about famous impacts. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "meteorite" or whether a comet and a meteor are the same thing (they're not—comets are icy bodies that form tails, meteors burn up in the atmosphere). The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a diagram of a comet and a labeled meteoroid/meteor/meteorite flow chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the differences. I added a couple simple asteroid, comet, and meteor drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw a comet and label its parts on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
