Sustainable Agriculture word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this sustainable agriculture puzzle set for my 4th graders during our Earth science and environmental unit. The kids knew farming had something to do with food, but they had no idea how to balance growing enough food with protecting the planet for the future — or what words like sustainable, compost, or erosion really meant in practice. They kept mixing up what "organic" actually means and whether it's just a buzzword or a real farming method with rules, and they had no idea that farmers have to worry about things like soil loss, water use, and pesticide resistance. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using vocabulary like sustainable, organic, erosion, compost, irrigation, terracing, biodiversity, conservation, food waste, and agroecology .

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of agroecology (it's a long one) or whether compost and fertilizer are the same thing (they're not — compost is organic matter that improves soil health; fertilizer can be synthetic or organic and is added to boost plant growth). The crossword I use for partners or as a review after a lesson where we discuss things like pest control without synthetic chemicals and how small farms or community gardens can be part of the solution .

Works for 4th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one sustainable practice from the puzzle and explain why it's good for the planet on the back, or I ask them to brainstorm a small change their family could make to waste less food. The kids actually ask for these now.
