The Declaration of Independence word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this Declaration of Independence puzzle set for my 4th graders during our American Revolution unit. The kids had heard of the document but had no idea why it was written, who signed it, or what "inalienable rights" meant. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Declaration, independence, Jefferson, Congress, July 4th, 1776, rights, liberty, life, pursuit of happiness, grievance, king, colony, signer, and freedom. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the key ideas finally make sense.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about who wrote the Declaration. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple quill and scroll drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers name two rights mentioned in the Declaration on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
