Tier II Vocabulary Entrance Cards Use these vocabulary entrance cards as an engaging warm-up activity for your 9th and 10th grade English classes. As students arrive to class, meet them in the hallway and ask them to define or provide an example of a Tier II vocabulary term printed on a card. If a student answers correctly, they may enter the classroom. If they are unsure, send them to the back of the line to study the card and try again before entering. The entrance card activity allows you to informally assess students' vocabulary knowledge in a lively way that encourages peer discussions. Cards are designed for whole class participation, but could also be used with small groups or as a homework extension.
