Transformations of Functions Card Sort Partner Activity | Algebra 1 &2

About This Product
In this partner activity, students will match a function equation to the verbal description of its transformation from the parent function to its graph, without the help of a calculator. (Though students can check their work in the end with a calculator.) In total they will be making 16 groups of three. They need to utilize the structure of the function and their understanding of transformations to sort these cards into their groups of three. This activity does a great job getting students talking math to each other and deepening their own understanding of function transformations.
Prep work:
Print out this activity single-sided. (I recommend printing each page--and therefore each type of card: function, description, graph--on a different colored sheet of paper to make directions easier).
Make the same number of copies as groups of partners.
Cut out the cards - I suggest either clipping each set of 48 cards together or putting them in a sandwich bag together to ensure no cards get lost or mixed. (Perhaps laminate if you plan to use year after year.)
What's Included:
Directions page
48 card sort cards (creates 16 groups, representing 16 different functions, of 3 -- one equation, one verbal description of the transformation, one graph)
Answer key
Aligns with CCSS standards for Algebra 1 & 2. Pairs well with lesson on transformations of functions either as extra practice to deepen understanding during the lesson or as review.
