Vegetables Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this vegetables vocabulary puzzle set for my 1st and 2nd graders during our health and nutrition unit. The kids could name a few vegetables like carrots and corn, but they had no idea what words like broccoli, spinach, or zucchini meant when we talked about different types of vegetables. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like carrot, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, corn, pea, bean, potato, sweet potato, tomato, cucumber, onion, pepper, and zucchini. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vegetable vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or indoor recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable (it's a fruit, botanically, but we eat it like a vegetable). The crossword I use for partners or as a review. I added a couple simple carrot, broccoli, and tomato drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for K through 2nd grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw their favorite vegetable on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
