World History & Geography word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this world history geography puzzle set for my 4th graders during our social studies unit. The kids could find a few countries on a map but had no idea where ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, or Rome were located. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, India, Mesopotamia, Nile, Tiber, Yellow River, Indus, continent, empire, civilization, ancient, and location. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the places and names finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether the Nile River is in Egypt or another country. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple pyramid, column, and compass drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers name one ancient civilization and the continent it was on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
