This middle school science lesson introduces the essential needs that humans (astronauts) must meet in order to survive while exploring in the extreme environment of outer space: •Oxygen •Water •Food •Waste Removal •Temperature •Light •Pressure How to Use: One need (oxygen) is comprehensively explained as an example to show your students. You can assign the other six needs as you see fit: Students can research one or two individually or in small groups and share the information with the class (a jigsaw activity), or they can complete the whole assignment independently. This is also a great way to help your students practice using focused search terms on the internet. You can do a quick mini-lesson on an interactive whiteboard, showing them how you would search for one of the items before letting them use technology to do research themselves. Student Instructions: Humans have several needs that must be met to survive in any extreme environment on Earth or in space. We need to have oxygen to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, a way to store or remove waste, a certain temperature to keep our body safe, some light (but protection from too much direct sunlight), and the correct pressure so our organs don’t collapse or explode. This resource was developed to meet the requirements of the 8th Grade Expressions & Equations Standards below: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE .B.5 Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving objects has greater speed. Pre-Requisites: Students should already have a general understanding of how to write an equation from a verbal description, how to test for proportionality between any two ratios, and how to graph coordinates. PLEASE NOTE: This lesson was made to build off of the extensive work done in 7th grade on proportional relationships and would not be thorough enough for a classroom that is taking the 7th grade state test .

These high school financial literacy worksheets will show your students why compound interest is helpful for investors while also letting them practice math skills using percentages and a simple mathematic formula! How to Use: Print 4 pages for each student. Page 1 teaches students how to calculate compound interest step by step. Students need to have a basic understanding of writing percentages in decimal form and multiplying to find the percent of a number. Next, students will be given their initial investment amount & a yearly interest rate. Each student in your class can be given different values so they have to do their own unique calculations, and to allow comparisons to be made. This provides for easy differentiation as well- you can choose what percentage interest rate each student gets based on their ability. Students will calculate the amount of compound interest they earn over ten years. They can then check their calculations using the compound interest formula that is included. Next, they can use the formula to calculate compound interest over longer periods of time. Your class can compare their results- leading to an interesting class discussion (prompt questions are included). Make sure to point out how compound interest is helpful for investing and saving and detrimental for borrowing money. Finally, students reflect on their learning by writing a paragraph after the lesson. Hopefully they will leave class wanting to start a saving account! Grades to Use With: This compound interest lesson with worksheets is designed for high school students in grades 8 through 12.
