Zombie Government Teacher Simulation Guide Thanks for your support in getting this product! I worked hard to make it a flexible and fun adaptation of the activity I made for my classroom. Don’t hesitate to adapt the activity to best mesh with your classroom. The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate to students how difficult group decision making is, how tricky insurgent groups can be, and how community needs like food, water, education, and entertainment can quickly be neglected when safety concerns are major factors. Each day students will be in their small groups making decisions about their government. You, as the facilitator, act as a kind of game manager. Some groups will find making decisions very easy, others will struggle with basics such as who is in charge? As a general rule of thumb, I make announcements mid-class every day, like a newspaper of the simulation. I can use this opportunity to individualize the conditions within the various groups, or to make things harder on groups that are finding the task easy. See the following page for ideas I’ve used in the past. Here are some general ideas on “events” that could spring up in each QZ: -- Imposter! One of the group members is known to be working with the Fireflies, but it is unclear who (approach a student before class to let them know) -- Food crisis! Rations are short, and it is unclear how to feed the population -- Road blocks! The Fireflies have blocked roads in order to combat the curfew. Now trucks, tanks, and vehicles cannot move throughout the city -- Tainted water! The diseased fungus has entered the water supply! How will the group let their residents know, and provide a solution? -- Assassination! The group leader has been taken out by the Fireflies. How will the group respond? -- An Olive Branch! The Fireflies have proposed a peace treaty, so long as they can have an equal say in all government decisions. If the group has a leader, they will now have 1 Government leader, and 1 Firefly leader. If they have a 5 person council, they will now have a 10 person council (half Fireflies), etc. -- And anything else you can think of! The more creativity the more the game sticks with students. What is Included: There is an instructional page with printing instructions. There are letter W posters with various letter W words. There are handwriting task cards that allow students to practice writing the letter W as well as words that begin with the letter W. There are beginning sound clip cards that allow students to practice clipping the images that begin with the letter W. There is a sorting activity where you sort pictures that begins with W from words that do not begin with W. The letter W sorting cards that can also be used to play memory, matching, or concentration games. These cards can also be used during a lesson in a pocket chart as well as for a center display. When to Use: All of the activities make great literacy centers, by placing each set of activities in the center and letting students complete activities alone or with a partner. This alphabet game provides students with a fun way to practice on the initial sound of the letter N. The game focuses on the most common sound of the initial /n/ sound. What is Included: * One color gameboard * One black and white gameboard What do you need to play: * One of the gameboards * A die * Something to mark the inner spaces with * A player piece to move around the edge of the board This game can be a single player or a two player game. To play, students will need one gameboard, one die, 20 objects to mark the inner part of the game board, and a game piece for each student playing. First, a student will roll the die and move his game piece around the outside of the board. The student will then cover the corresponding picture in the middle of the game board. The winner or end of game can be determined by one of the following rules below, depending on if the student is playing alone or with a partner. Writing Prompts Writing prompts are designed to continue the theme or lessons learned in the story. Students are persuaded to write in a variety of ways and each prompt includes several cues to help. As with the spelling/vocab section, writing prompts will vary. This includes research pieces, reading responses, poetry and creative writing prompts. Full Answer Keys Full answer keys and sample responses are provided so no matter how busy you are, you know you're covered! Mixed question answers provide evidence from the text, math questions contain the relevant workings. Answers are designed for use by the teacher, but also suitable as a handout to the student. This AG Word Family Sorting Activity is a great resource for your students to practice recognizing AG words and pictures in isolation. This sorting activity includes three different sorts for students to categorize AG family words in an engaging literacy center. Sorts Included in this Literacy Resource Sort words that are included in the AG family from words that are not included in the AG family. Sort pictures that represents words in the AG family from pictures that represent words not in the AG family. Sort between real and nonsense AG words. The teacher can easily differentiate these sorting activities for students who need more or less support to be successful in completing these sorts. How to Use: The teacher can create a file folder sorting activity The teacher can add magnets to the picture pieces and create a cookie tray sorting activity The teacher can place the cards and mats in a box for a simple sorting activity To assemble file folder activities, position the two sorting mats on each side of a file folder. Use the word and image cards for sorting onto the mats. Adding hook and loop fasteners to both the cards and mats ensures the cards remain positioned once sorted. For the cookie tray sorting, attach magnets to each card's back. Lay the mats next to each other on the tray, and the magnets will secure the cards to the mats. These methods provide an interactive literacy station that will captivate your kindergartners and first graders as they learn and practice AG family words.
