Adding & Subtracting Positive and Negative Numbers

Adding & Subtracting Positive and Negative Numbers
Math, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Subtraction, Grade 4, 5, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

We are always searching for engaging ways to teach our students new skills and review skills that they already know! This is a 1-page worksheet that will allow students enough practice to sharpen their skills. Students will practice with Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative Numbers. The objective is for students to be able to understand the difference in the rules and apply them effectively to a variety of problems. This worksheet is most appropriate for 4th grade students. You may have 5th grade students who need the additional practice. There are 2 pages included broken down into 4 sections. In the first section, students will: Solve each addition problem. If the numbers have the same SIGNS (e.g. negative + negative) your answer will be NEGATIVE. In the second section, students will: Solve each addition problem. This time, the signs are DIFFERENT (e.g. negative + positive)! If the signs are different, instead of adding them, you SUBTRACT them. To determine whether the answer is positive or negative, you look at the BIGGEST number in the question. If it is negative, the answer is negative; if it is positive, the answer is positive. In the third section, students will: Solve each subtraction problem. Remember to turn subtraction questions into addition ones (when the starting number is smaller than the number you are taking away) and move the subtraction sign next to the last number (e.g. 2 – 8 becomes 2 + -8). In the fourth section, students will: Solve each subtraction problem. Remember, DON’T attempt to do subtraction questions SO turn them into addition ones (e.g. -7 - -3 becomes -7 + --3). When you do this, you get a negative and a negative. A negative and a negative is always a positive so -7 + --3 becomes -7 + 3. You can easily print and laminate these pages, so they retain their durability for repeated use. Students can write answers with a dry erase marker. This will make a great math center or small group activity. This worksheet set is also great as an assessment . Answer key included. I hope you enjoy! Bingo Game - Add and Subtact Fractions Including Mixed Numbers

Bingo Game - Add and Subtact Fractions Including Mixed Numbers
Math, Fractions, Grade 5, Activities, Games

Two Bingo Games for your students to have fun practicing adding and subtracting fractions including mixed numbers. Instructions include: Have students to make a 4 x 4 game board. They will fill in the answers in random order. This way everyone has a different board but all of the answers. Put up the first 2 questions. When all students finish #1, you can change to the second page, which still has #2 but also #3 for those that have also finished #2. This allows some students to work ahead when ready. When everyone has finished #2, move to the next screen, which has #3 and #4 as some students will be ready for #4. Continue in this way. Students can use a highlighter to mark their answers. Use a different color for each game. (Don’t have them completely mark out their answers with pen or pencil in the first game because they will use this same board in the second game.) Students MUST show their work on paper to get credit for a BINGO. For the problems that don’t have work to show, they must explain their answer on paper. The first game uses questions #1-8. In a regular size class there should be 5-6 bingos after this many questions. You can start the second game #9-16 or save that for another class time. Just make sure students save their board because both games use the same board. This skill corresponds to the 5th Grade Math Common Core Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.) This 20 slide PowerPoint contains two bingo games of 8 questions each. Students will randomly fill in their own bingo boards with the given answers. All students will have every answer but in a different order on their bingo card. This way if a student works a problem and the answer is not on their card they know they have made an error. They will use the same card for both games so they must mark answers differently for each game. Detailed instructions are given in the file. The answer key is on the final slide of the PowerPoint. I usually give candy for bingos. Bingo has always been one of the best ways I have found for student engagement.

Microscopes. This resource is suitable for students in grades 5-7. Here are the first few paragraphs to give you an idea of the product. Microscopes History of the Microscope Microscopes let us see tiny things by making them look bigger. People have been using microscopes for hundreds of years. The first microscopes were invented in the late 1500s. They were simple magnifying glasses. Magnifying glasses made things look a little bigger. They let people see small objects like insects up close for the first time. In 1590, two eyeglass makers named Hans and Zacharias built the first compound microscope. Compound microscopes use more than one lens. More lenses mean you can see things that are much smaller. Hans and Zacharias' microscope let them study tiny things like bugs, fabric, and plant and animal cells. But early microscopes blurred the images. Over many years, scientists improved how microscopes worked. In 1665, a scientist named Robert Hooke first used the word "cell." He saw tiny cell structures in cork using a simple microscope. Later, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek built a microscope with just one lens. This let him see microorganisms for the first time. In the 1800s, engineers developed better lenses. These new achromatic lenses made the images in microscopes much clearer. They also let them magnify more. This let scientists see smaller things. In the late 1800s, two German engineers named Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe made huge advances in microscopes. Their microscopes could see cells in much greater detail.
