What Motivates You? SEL Lesson Plan with Student Survey and Answer Handouts

In this motivation lesson plan, students will learn about extrinsic versus intrinsic motivation. There is a PPT slide presentation with animation on most slides to full engagement (could be converted to a Google Slide presentation) to learn about both types of motivation-extrinsic and intrinsic. There are 2 video clips (The Office video clip is cropped so there is no inappropriate language and there is a Secret Life of Pets trailer-both via Videolink.) There is a student survey as well as an answer score sheet. In this survey students will answer 10 questions in a range of 1-4, where 1 represents "not at all me" and 4 represents "that's totally me." Students will be able to score their answers with the included answer sheet to determine their dominant motivational style. Included is also a process on how to increase either intrinsic or extrinsic motivational style. Such process involves asking themselves a series of questions (7 questions) to target what they could do to increase their weaker motivational style since both styles are needed. Please review the PPT slide notes for more lesson content and options for delivering the slide content.

The “NET GAMES” are ideal for large groups; from 30 to 60 students if you have 2 volleyball type nets and a regular sized gym or outdoor play area. If you have a larger space, more nets and a few adults to supervise, more players can participate at the same time. Obviously less than 30 students can play these net games and several modifications are suggested and can be implemented to help fit the needs of your program. These games can be used by PE TEACHERS as an extension of their volleyball unit (after the basic skills have been taught) or it can be utilized by a CLASSROOM TEACHER as an organized RECESS GAME ACTIVITY to keep students active and focused during their play time. In addition, many of the net and volley games make great large-group activities for school-wide events such as FIELD DAY or for a class or grade-level REWARD DAY sometime during the school year. These net and volley games involve many volleyball-related and skills and concepts such as serving, bumping, setting, striking, saving, digging, spiking, agility, accuracy, coordination, rotation, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Several of the games also provide an ideal avenue to develop the students’’ catching, throwing and tracking skills. There are a couple of small-group activities where students use smaller courts with badminton nets (or jump ropes that can be held by other students).
