Fall Cut and Paste, Coloring, and Writing Project: Scarecrow Craft

Children enjoy creating items that they can display. Without requiring you to do a lot of preparation work in advance, this scarecrow project provides kids an excuse to use scissors, pick up crayons, squeeze a glue stick, and truly consider how they want their scarecrow to appear. Everything is print-and-go. After you distribute the papers, the kids decide which hat to wear, color the clothing as they see fit, cut out the parts, and assemble everything. The whole concept is that no two scarecrows are alike. Some children will smile foolishly at theirs. Some people will go all out for Halloween. It's okay if some people decide to color the overalls purple. In addition to the craft itself, children can write and draw a description of their scarecrow, including its appearance, habitat, and possibly daily activities. That's a fantastic practice for beginning writers. The drawing portion provides children who are not yet proficient writers with a tangible task. The scarecrow body parts, a head and face set, hat choices, pants, shoes, clothing details, detailed assembly instructions, a display page, a writing and drawing prompt page, and a final showcase page are all included in the resource. If you're utilizing it as a bulletin board, that final section is important because it provides a place for the completed item to reside. Cutting, fine motor control, following instructions, early writing, and verbally or in writing expressing a completed project are among the skills that pupils practice. Fall lessons, farm themes, harvest activities, and art centers all naturally incorporate it. It works great for small groups, early finishers who need something to do, and homeschool days when you want an activity that, once set up, takes care of itself. Print it out. Set out the materials. Observe how many scarecrows there are.

Grocery Ads, Coupons + Lists: a functional reading and math set for high school life skills, special education, and transition programs. Read the ad, read the small print, and add up a real shopping list. Why I made this: Most students can find the milk. What trips them up is the small print: 2 for $5, limit 2, expires 10/18, only on a $25 order. I wrote this set around the small print, because that is where the money is. It sticks to reading ads, coupons, and lists. Comparing unit prices to find the better buy is its own skill and lives in my Money Math Task Cards. How it is different from my Money Math Task Cards: Money Math covers unit price and better buy comparisons, including one coupon card. This set leaves better buy out on purpose. It is about reading a whole weekly ad and a page of coupons: sale dates, limits, deal words, and whether a coupon can be used today. What's included: • A teacher page: why I made it, how to use both levels, and the skills covered • Words to know: 10 key words, each with a picture • 3 pages of practice documents: a full-page weekly grocery ad, a page of coupons, and a shopping list with a cost table. Reading a Restaurant Menu: a functional reading and math set for high school life skills, special education, and transition programs. Find the section, read the price, add it up, and order. Why I made this: Ordering food is one of the first places students use reading and math out in public, and one of the first places they get nervous. If a student can find the right section, read the price, and add two items before getting to the counter, ordering gets a lot easier. These menus look like the ones students will see in town, so the practice carries over. How it is different from my Money Math Task Cards: those cards drill next dollar, change, better buy, and receipts as single problems. This set is about reading a whole menu: sections, sizes, combos, and add-ons, then pricing a real order. No Money Math cards are repeated. Warehouses and distribution centers hire a lot of entry-level workers, and many of our students like the clear routine: scan, pick, pack, repeat. The part that takes teaching is reading location codes and living with the safety rules around forklifts and pallets. This set covers the words, the steps, and those rules. This set covers warehouse and distribution work: picking, packing, putaway, receiving, and forklift safety. Retail is mostly customer questions and putting things back where they go. The students who do well know the store's words, like recovery and go-backs, and they know the rules that protect them: don't chase a shoplifter, don't hand out discounts, don't hide a short drawer.
