Here's a unique and fun way for your students to strengthen their reading inference skills. With this collection of reading worksheets, they'll be reading funny riddles and then trying to figure out the answers by paying close attention to the exact wording of carefully designed hints. Inferencing may sound hard, but it's a natural and fun reading strategy when thinking about each word of a clue that will lead you to the riddle's answer.. Close reading and inferencing are important reading skills and these funny riddles worksheets are a great way to motivate students to develop their inference reading skills as they read and re-read the riddles and clues, trying to come up with the answers. Once students "get" the joke, which may require a knowledge of homophones, homonyms, figures of speech or new vocabulary words, they'll be able to pose and explain the riddles to others, strengthening their oral presentation skills. Each ready-to-print worksheet is followed by an answer key, so that students can self-check their work.. The PDF file can also be emailed or assigned through Google Classroom. In the classroom, hand out a riddle worksheet to pairs or small groups of students, and have them take turns reading a riddle and then reading the hints one by one until the answer is inferred, developing their collaborative discussion skills. This FL fun, Find and Color worksheet for beginning blends is excellent for acquainting children orally with initial consonant blends and helping them develop the necessary phonemic awareness in preparation for more advanced blending work, involving four phonemes. What is included in the pack? One PDF sheet for the FL blend. This is a sample of our pack of 20 activities covering common initial blends which can be found here in one PDF file: less clutter on your computer! What do the worksheets involve? Pupils are instructed to combine the two letters on the worksheet and then look for objects that start with that consonant blend. Then, these items ought to be coloured, leaving the others uncoloured. Children can easily work on the sheet unaided once they have been instructed, although, with those children with special needs, it is strongly suggested that an adult works with the child for maximum benefit. How to use The introduction of the concept of initial blends needs to be done thoroughly. When I work with children, especially those with a special need, I first like to teach children to blend two consonant letters. Then I work on developing the children's phonemic awareness: that being the ability to hear two consonant letters blended at the beginning of a word, easily. This is difficult for some pupils and takes a lot of practice. These worksheets can assist by first encouraging students to blend the two consonant letters and then by helping them to hear the blend at the start of a word. As often as you can, practice blending the letters in each initial blend and encourage the students to follow suit. I find that modelling is key at this stage. Learning the U.S. states and capitals doesn’t have to be a daunting task for your 5th graders. This set of worksheets and task cards will make the journey engaging and fun. You can use these activities as a supplement to your grade 5 social studies/geography curriculum. They are a great way to break up the monotony of memorizing the names of states and capitals and allow your learners to gain knowledge in a few of our nation’s major landmarks. Not only that, but they will also walk away having learned some fun facts about 10 U.S. states. As learners work their way through the 20 task cards, they will be asked to identify states and capitals, but with a few twists. They’ll identify states by their silhouettes, the names of the capitals, or the state’s nickname. Answers will be given in the form of naming a state, capital, or a state’s two letter abbreviation. In one of the worksheets, learners will put their internet research skills to the test in order to find the state and corresponding capital in which famous landmarks are found. Another worksheet requires learners to solve grade level math problems as a way to find the names of states and their capitals. These activities are rounded out with a worksheet in which learners will identify states by their silhouettes and unscramble the name of their capitals. The 4 worksheets are PRINT and GO, saving you valuable time. Once the initial prep of the task cards is complete, you will have a go-to activity to use with your learners year-over-year.
