Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Recognise a two-element AB repeat in a row of pictures
Continue an AB sequence by working out which of the two elements comes next
Teaching tips
All five sheets carry the same heading and the same structure, so the first can be worked through with a child as a model and the remaining four handed over
The pattern elements are emoji faces rather than abstract shapes, which lets a child name each element aloud before deciding which comes next
The set stays on AB throughout, so it works as the first step before longer repeats are introduced from another source
Skills covered
Pattern recognition — students read a two-element AB repeat across a printed row and identify the rule governing it.
Continuing a sequence — each exercise asks what comes next in an AB run rather than simply naming the pattern.
Reading pictures as symbols — the pattern elements are emoji graphics, so a familiar picture stands in for an abstract term such as A or B.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
Which type of pattern do the sheets use?
AB throughout. The cover and all five worksheets are headed AB PATTERNS, a two-element alternation. Longer repeats such as ABB or ABA are not part of this set, so it sits at the entry point of pattern work rather than covering the range.
