Look Inside · 9 pages · answer key included

Cover for absolute value function transformation notes on parent graphs, showing fill-in pages with tables and V graphs
Title page to open the parent graphs unit
Parent functions intro: students fill in blanks on representing numbers on a number line, the coordinate plane and 3D axes
Opening notes to build context before graphing
Parent functions defined: students complete notes on absolute value and label the parts of f(x) = |x| and f(x) = abs(x)
Guided notes on vocabulary and notation
Graphing absolute value functions: students note distance from zero for 6 and -6 and see the |x| table and V graph
Mini-lesson notes linking distance from zero to the V shape
Piecewise form of |x| with notes on vertex, axis of symmetry, domain and range, then the general form af(b(x - c)) + d
Key-features recap leading into transformations
Quick notes on factoring out a coefficient and finding the axis of symmetry, as in f(x) = |2x - 4| = |2(x - 2)|
Fill-in notes to pause on before graphing practice
Parameters a and b: students complete tables and graph f(x) = (1/2)|x|, 2|x|, |(1/2)x| and |2x| against the parent V
Guided graphing of the a and b parameters
Reflections of absolute value graphs: students graph -|x| and |-x| from tables, then read notes on plotting points
Reflection practice plus tips on choosing points
