Read the same calculation in five forms — strip diagram, ten frame, pictorial, number sentence and number line — and recognise them as one relationship
Use the correct name for each number in a calculation: addend, addend and sum for addition; minuend, subtrahend and difference for subtraction
Move forwards and backwards on a 0-10 number line to model addition and subtraction as hops
Teaching tips
Use two paper colors if helpful, keeping the Addition and Subtraction headings visible as well.
Use the final PDF page as the student reference; printed directions refer to page 13, but the supplied file has 12 pages.
Ask students to describe the whole and parts. Use keyword panels as vocabulary, not as a rule for choosing an operation without reading the problem.

Reading multiple representations — students meet 6 + 2 = 8 as a strip diagram, a ten frame, a picture, an equation and a number line hop, all on one display.
Using operation vocabulary — the chart names addend, addend and sum on the addition side and minuend, subtrahend and difference on the subtraction side.

What is needed to assemble the finished chart?
Two colours of copy paper, a sheet of 24" x 32" anchor chart paper and tape or a glue stick. The guide directs one colour for the addition pieces and the other for the subtraction pieces, then cutting each piece out and arranging them as the layout picture shows.
Which numbers does the chart use in its worked examples?
The chart uses 6 + 2 = 8 and 6 − 2 = 4. These calculations share two numbers, but they are not one fact family; a related subtraction fact for 6 + 2 = 8 is 8 − 2 = 6.
What do students get to keep once the display is up?
A single reference page that reproduces the whole chart in miniature — both columns, all five representations and both key-word panels — sized to go into a math notebook, so the wall display and the personal copy match.
