Write three different equations — one addition, one subtraction, one multiplication — that all give the same chosen number
Choose numbers that make an equation true rather than solving one that is already set
Measure and record real quantities from a child's own life: shoe size, pencil length, number of pets and height

Teaching tips

The "That's like:" panel is the mathematical core — set a floor before students start, such as no zeros and no repeated fact, or the multiplication line collapses to the favourite number times one
Have measuring equipment ready: shoe size, pencil and height all need something to measure with before the panel can be filled
A child who picks a prime as their favourite number will find the multiplication line hardest, which is a useful discussion to have with the class rather than to head off

Skills covered

Writing equations to a target — students complete +, - and * sentences that each have to equal their own chosen favourite number.
Choosing between operations — the same value has to be produced three ways, so a student who reaches it by addition still has to find a subtraction and a multiplication that work.
Measuring and recording — the My Math Facts panel asks for shoe size, pencil, number of pets and height as four separate recorded quantities.

Build their favourite number three ways. Beside the box where the number is written, the panel prints three unfinished equations — one using +, one using - and one using * — each ending in an equals sign, so the student supplies numbers that produce the same result in three different operations.

Which measurements does the My Math Facts panel collect?

Four, each with its own heading: SHOE SIZE, PENCIL, # OF PETS and HEIGHT. Two of them need a ruler or tape measure, so it is worth having measuring equipment out when the poster is handed round.

Which multiplication symbol does the poster use?

An asterisk. The third equation line prints "*" rather than × or a dot, which is worth pointing out to younger classes who have only met the × sign.
