Book Parts and Features word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this book parts puzzle set for my 2nd and 3rd graders during our reading unit. The kids could read a book but had no idea what the title page, glossary, or index were for. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like cover, spine, title, author, illustrator, title page, table of contents, chapter, heading, glossary, index, page number, paragraph, sentence, illustration, photograph, caption, and bibliography. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the book features finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about whether the glossary and index are the same thing. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple open book and bookmark drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 2nd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick a book and name three parts they can find on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
