Grade 6 Statistics and Data word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this statistics and data puzzle set for my 6th graders during our math unit. The kids could look at numbers but had no idea what words like mean, median, mode, or range meant when we started learning about analyzing data. They also kept mixing up mean and median. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like data, mean, median, mode, range, outlier, average, maximum, minimum, survey, graph, box plot, and histogram . I also included a few like "frequency" and "interval" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "histogram" (it's a tricky one) or whether mean and average are the same thing (they are—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a data set and examples of each measure nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see how mean, median, mode, and range are different . I added a couple simple number list and graph drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 6th through 7th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers find the mean, median, mode, and range of a small data set on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
