Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Trace the path of food through the digestive system from the oral cavity to the large intestine

  • Identify the macronutrients and micronutrients and describe each one's function in the body

  • Distinguish saturated, unsaturated, and trans fats and their effects on cholesterol

Teaching tips

  • Present the anatomy deck before the nutrition deck, since the nutrition deck opens with a review of anatomy vocabulary (bolus, chyme, epiglottis) introduced in the anatomy notes.

  • Use the teeth deck as a shorter standalone lesson, since its content on dentin, enamel, and cavities is more self-contained than the multi-organ anatomy and nutrition decks.

  • Use the nutrition deck’s opening review questions and answers to recall the anatomy and teeth lessons. Add a separate quiz if you want a formal assessment.

Skills covered

  • Digestive system sequencing — students trace how food moves from the mouth through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.

  • Macronutrient and micronutrient classification — students identify carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, vitamins, and minerals and describe each one's role.

  • Fat-type comparison — students distinguish saturated, unsaturated, and trans fats by their food sources and cholesterol effects.
