Ecosystems and Energy Flow word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this ecosystems and energy flow puzzle set for my 4th graders during our life science unit. The kids could name a food chain but got confused when I introduced energy pyramids, trophic levels, or the idea that only 10% of energy moves up. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like energy flow, food chain, food web, producer, consumer, decomposer, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, predator, prey, trophic level, energy pyramid, sun, and transfer. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally make sense.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about why there are fewer top predators than plants. The crossword I use for partners. I added a couple simple arrow drawings showing energy moving from sun to grass to rabbit but nothing too busy.

Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw a simple energy pyramid on the back with four levels. The kids actually ask for these now.
