Judge a true-or-false statement about the text and defend the judgement with evidence from it
Explain the meaning of an unfamiliar word - "oddness" - from the way the article uses it

Teaching tips

The two true-or-false items both add "Argue your answer from the text" and are given double answer lines, so they are the ones to model first if the class has only met single-sentence answers.
The article is longer than the question sheet, so it works well read a day ahead or in pairs, with the questions kept for the following session.
Prompt 3 asks students to name another groundbreaking character in children's literature - worth naming two or three possibilities on the board, since a class that has read little in English will otherwise stall there.

What kinds of thinking do the ten questions ask for?

Four kinds, in a deliberate spread. Some are direct retrieval - a date, a house, what the neighbours find fascinating. Two are true-or-false statements carrying the instruction "Argue your answer from the text", with double answer lines for the justification. One asks for the meaning of "oddness" in the student's own words. Two more ask why the character was innovative and why the books succeeded, which have to be assembled across several paragraphs.
