Grade 2 Fairy Tale Vocabulary word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this continents and oceans puzzle set for my 2nd graders during our geography unit. The kids could name a few continents like Africa and North America, but they had no idea there were seven continents or that there are five oceans—not just the Atlantic and Pacific. They also kept mixing up which ocean was connected to which continent. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic, continent, ocean, equator, and hemisphere . I also threw in a few like "globe" and "map" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "Antarctica" (it's a hard one) or whether Australia is a country and a continent (it is, but the kids always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a world map nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the names and locations together . I added a couple simple continent outline and globe drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 2nd through 4th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one continent and write its name and one ocean it touches on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
