Grade 7 Life Science Heredity word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this heredity puzzle set for my 7th graders during our life science unit. The kids knew some basics about traits but had no idea what words like genetics, DNA, or dominant meant when we started learning about how traits are passed from one generation to the next. They also kept mixing up genotype and phenotype, and they didn't understand how alleles worked. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like heredity, genetics, DNA, gene, trait, allele, dominant, recessive, genotype, phenotype, homozygous, heterozygous, Punnett square, and mutation . I also included a few like "chromosome" and "offspring" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "heterozygous" (it's a tricky one) or whether dominant and recessive are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a Punnett square example or a trait chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the difference between genotype and phenotype . I added a couple simple DNA double helix and Punnett square drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 7th through 8th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers use a Punnett square to show a cross between two parents with different traits on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
