Grade 5 Earth's Layers word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this Earth's layers puzzle set for my 5th graders during our Earth science unit. The kids knew the Earth had layers but had no idea what words like crust, mantle, or core meant when we started learning about the structure of our planet. They also kept mixing up the order and the characteristics of each layer. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like crust, mantle, outer core, inner core, magma, lithosphere, asthenosphere, tectonic plate, rock, and geology . I also threw in a few like "density" and "pressure" because they kept coming up in our class discussions about why the layers are different . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess, and the scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "asthenosphere" (it's a tricky one) or whether the inner core is solid or liquid (it's solid—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a diagram of Earth's layers nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the order and thickness of each layer . I added a couple simple Earth cross-section and rock drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 5th through 6th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw a diagram of Earth's layers and label each one on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
