I made this soil layers puzzle set for my 3rd and 4th graders during our Earth science unit. The kids thought dirt was just dirt until I tried explaining topsoil, subsoil, and bedrock. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like topsoil, subsoil, bedrock, humus, clay, sand, silt, loam, horizon, porosity, permeability, and leaching. Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary stick.
The download contains three two-page PDFs: one puzzle and its answer page in each file. The word search works well for quiet time after recess. The scramble gets them talking because they mix up "topsoil" and "subsoil" sometimes. The crossword I use for partners. The pages use decorative borders; a soil-layer model or diagram can be supplied separately.
Works for 2nd through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers draw a tiny soil layer diagram on the back and label it. The kids actually ask for these now.
