Grade 6 Ecosystems and Biodiversity word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this ecosystems and biodiversity puzzle set for my 6th graders during our life science unit. The kids could name a few habitats but had no idea what words like biodiversity, ecosystem, or sustainable meant when we started learning about the variety of life and the importance of balance. They also kept mixing up "species" and "population." So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using words like ecosystem, biodiversity, species, population, community, habitat, niche, producer, consumer, decomposer, food web, and sustainability . I also included a few like "endangered" and "extinct" because they kept coming up in our class discussions . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the vocabulary finally stick.

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "biodiversity" (it's a long one) or whether a species and a population are the same thing (they're not—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a food web diagram or an ecosystem image nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the connections . I added a couple simple tree, fish, and bird drawings but nothing too busy.

Works for 6th through 7th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one ecosystem and name one plant and one animal that live there on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
