Grade 8 Constitution and Government word search, scramble and crossword puzzle

I made this Constitution and government puzzle set for my 8th graders during our civics unit. The kids understood the three branches from earlier grades, but they kept mixing up concepts like "separation of powers" and "checks and balances," and they always struggled to remember the difference between the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution . So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using key vocabulary like Articles of Confederation, Constitution, Bill of Rights, Federalist Papers, amendments, veto, and the Preamble. I also made sure to include foundational principles like popular sovereignty, separation of powers, checks and balances, federalism, and the three branches—**Legislative**, Executive, and Judicial—because these are essential for understanding how the government actually functions .

The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after a lecture or as a review activity. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "legislative" or whether the Bill of Rights was part of the original Constitution (it wasn't—it was added later as the first ten amendments, and they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review before a test, and I usually have a simple diagram of the branches and a list of Preamble phrases nearby for the kids who need the visual support to connect the words to the concepts .

Works for 8th through 9th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers pick one word from the puzzles and write a sentence explaining why it's important to the Constitution or the government on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
