About this resource
What's inside this resource
With this resource, you can practice the initial or beginning consonant blends: sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw And there are a whole bunch of ways to do this. First of all, you can use the digital PDF file to present each word to your students. Just use the arrow keys on your PC or laptop to go from one word to the next. You can also use the printable flash cards to do so. Just print the cards, laminate them and cut them out. There are two different versions available, one with rounded corners and one with sharp corners. Choose whichever one you prefer. When it is time to test the words, just hand out the vocabulary list and follow this up with the vocab test the very next class. And for a bit of fun, go ahead and play the BINGO game. Your students are sure to have a blast with this!

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Recognize and read 20 words beginning with the sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, or sw consonant blends.
Supply the correct beginning blend to complete a partially written word (e.g., '____an' → 'scan' or 'swan').
Match a spoken or read word to its blend family during a bingo game.
Recall vocabulary words from a digital or print flashcard presentation.
Teaching tips
Introduce the words with the digital flashcard slideshow before assigning independent practice, since it presents the full word list in full-screen format.
Use the fill-in-the-blanks quiz before the full vocabulary quiz, since it only requires students to supply the blend rather than write the entire word.
Laminate the sharp-corner or rounded-corner flashcards for durable, reusable small-group or center practice.
Play the bingo game as a review after the quiz, using the text-only cards for read-aloud calling.
Skills covered
Initial consonant blend recognition — students read and identify words beginning with 8 target blends across flashcards, bingo, and quizzes.
Blend completion — students supply the correct 2-letter blend to finish a partial word on the fill-in-the-blanks quiz.
Vocabulary recall — students recall the 20-word list through digital flashcard presentation and a printable quiz.
Listening and matching — students match called-out words to their bingo card during the bingo game.

Questions teachers ask about this resource
How many different ways can students practice the same 20-word list?
Six — a digital flashcard slideshow, two styles of printable flashcards (rounded and sharp corners), a bingo game, a word list, and two quiz styles all draw on the same 20 words.
Does the fill-in-the-blanks quiz require students to write the whole word?
No — students only fill in the missing 2-letter beginning blend (for example, writing 'sc' or 'sw' before '_an' to complete 'scan' or 'swan'), not the entire word.
