Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Pick the noun out of a sentence where the alternatives are verbs, adjectives or adverbs

  • Choose the correct form of an uncountable noun rather than a plural or a verb that sounds similar

  • Choose the noun that makes sense in a gapped sentence, ruling out a proper noun or a mis-spelled plural

  • Name a word as a collective, common or proper noun

  • Record twenty answers on a numbered grid rather than on the question itself

Teaching tips

  • One question sits on each slide with three options, so the deck runs naturally as a whole-class round with hands up or whiteboards before the answer is shown

  • Print the Answer Sheet before starting โ€” it holds Q.1 to Q.20 in a grid with a teacher remarks box, and there is nowhere else for students to record

  • The task changes twice, at Q14 from finding the noun to filling a gap and at Q19 to naming a noun type; both are natural points to stop and re-explain

  • The distractors are built to catch a particular slip โ€” advices and advise against advice, busses and San Francisco against airport โ€” so they repay a moment's discussion rather than a straight mark

  • This is a sample from a wider noun series, so the noun types it reaches are narrower than a full unit would cover

Skills covered

  • Identifying nouns in context โ€” thirteen questions give a complete sentence and three candidate words, so the noun has to be found rather than recognised on its own.

  • Telling nouns from other parts of speech โ€” the wrong options are consistently verbs and modifiers such as stroll, slower, running, superb and yesterday.

  • Choosing noun forms โ€” one gap-fill sets advice against advices and advise, and another sets airport against the mis-spelled plural busses.

  • Naming noun types โ€” the last two questions ask whether crowd and Tokyo are collective, common or proper nouns.

  • Recording answers to a numbered sheet โ€” a separate printable grid collects all twenty responses with room for teacher remarks.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How does the task change across the twenty questions?

In three phases. Questions 1 to 13 give a sentence and ask which of three words is the noun. Questions 14 to 18 remove a word from a sentence and ask which of three forms fits the gap. Questions 19 and 20 give a single word โ€” crowd, then Tokyo โ€” and ask for its noun type.

Where do students write their answers?

On the printable Answer Sheet at the end of the deck. It carries a Name line, a grid of boxes running Q.1 to Q.20 in three columns, and a Teacher remarks/notes area beside them.

Which noun types does this sample actually reach?

Collective, common and proper are named outright in the last two questions, using crowd and Tokyo. Earlier items work on uncountable and plural forms through advice and busses without labelling them. Other noun categories in the wider series are not represented in these twenty questions.
