About This Product
Calm Moves for Paras is a ready-to-run 20-minute training for paraprofessionals on secondary special education teams. It gives paras a short set of everyday calm moves they can use in the room, the hallway, at lunch and at arrival, without a half-day binder.
Why I made this: I have 20+ years in education, mostly with secondary students in special education, and a lot of that time side by side with paras. Paras are often the closest adult when a student starts to heat up. They rarely get training that fits in one staff huddle. This module does.
What's included:
• Start Here page with a 3-step run plan
• Facilitator Notes: 20-minute run of show, what to say, timing cheat sheet
• 18 slides with speaker notes (editable PowerPoint, plus PDF; opens in Google Slides and Keynote)
• Say This, Not That handout, one page per para
• 10-question Module 1 Check and answer key
• Certificate of Completion
How I use it: Print the handout and the check. Open the slides. Run it in a staff huddle or PD block in about 20 minutes. Hand out certificates at the end.
The adult is the key to a calm room. This module is everyday calm support, not emergency or restraint protocol training. Follow your district's crisis procedures.
What you download: one zip with 8 files (7 PDFs and an editable PowerPoint).
Written by Jeremy D. Gooch, a teacher with 20+ years in education.
Pairs well with: the free Say This, Not That de-escalation phrases poster and the full Calm the Room Method staff PD kit, both in The Transition Cliff shop.
A note on scope: this is a short, practical module for everyday moments, like a student shutting down at a work station, pacing in the hallway, or getting loud at lunch. It is meant to be repeated. Many teams run it at the start of the year and again after winter break, then follow up with one calm move per week in staff huddles.
