Product description

From the author

My students have always understood sequences of transformations by simple test practice and I hope yours will feel more confident after practicing several types of sequences of transformation problems!

This resource was developed to provide students with extra practice when meeting the requirements of the 8th Grade Geometry Standards below:

CCSS.math.content.8.g.a.2

Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.

CCSS.math.content.8.g.a.4

Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Students will identify which sequence of rotations, reflections and translations proves two figures congruent.

  • Students will identify which sequence of rotations, reflections, translations and dilations proves two figures similar.

  • Students will calculate a resulting angle measure, side length or radius after applying a stated sequence of transformations.

Teaching tips

  • Choose task cards for movement-based review or the continuous worksheet for seated practice.

  • Use questions 12–15 for measurement reasoning and question 16 to return to congruence.

  • Ask students to explain transformation order rather than relying on a selected letter.

Skills covered

  • Recognizing rigid transformation sequences

  • Recognizing similarity involving dilation

  • Calculating measurements after transformations

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How do the two formats differ?

The same sixteen questions appear as task cards and a continuous worksheet. Both have letter-answer keys; the keys do not supply worked solutions.
