Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Organize personal, educational, and experiential information into standard resume sections.

  • Write a concise one-sentence career objective statement.

  • Select relevant work, club/sport, and volunteer experiences and describe them in 2-3 sentences each.

Teaching tips

  • Have students complete the blank template with their own real information rather than copying the example.

  • Use the completed example to discuss what makes an objective statement or activity description effective.

  • Point out that a heading with no applicable experience (e.g., no awards) should be omitted rather than left blank.

Skills covered

  • Resume formatting — students organize contact information, objective, education, and experience into labeled sections.

  • Concise self-description — students write 2-3 sentence descriptions of job, club, or volunteer responsibilities.

  • Reference selection — students identify appropriate references and write a one-sentence rationale for each.
