About this resource

What's inside this resource

This wonderful and touching book is in many homes and classrooms around the country. This is what motivated me to create a quick, easy, fun, and rigorous comprehension, vocabulary, short answer, and assessment packet for teachers and parents to use to grow their students in Reading in a fun and easy way. This packet can be used independently, small groups, or as a classroom. The PAW PRINT OF LEARNING ANSWER PAD FOR COMPREHENSION ASSESSMENT template is fun and practical for teachers to use to assess their students for each short chapter. The short yet rigorous worksheets along with the short and quick exit quizzes give the student and teacher quality work and assessment. Note: The exit quiz questions are NOT in the comprehension worksheets. They are different questions and answers. Also, the teacher can verbally give the questions to the student for the student to record on the PAW PRINT OR there is a handout version of the same exit quiz if the teacher wants to use this instead.

This 30 Page Comprehension/Assessment/Exit Quiz/Book Study Packet Includes:

· 7 Chapter 1-5 Short Answer/Comprehension Work Sheets!

· 7 Chapter Mystery Match Vocabulary Words Using Context Clues & Mystery Fun Blanks!

· 7 Student Score Part for Each Work Sheet!

· 7 Rigorous Four-Point Comprehension Quizzes the teacher can use to assess the students quickly and consistently to challenge their testing and reading Skills! Also, there is a handout version of the same exit quiz for each chapter!

· A fun and engaging PAW PRINT PROOF OF LEARNING ANSWER PAD FOR COMPREHENSION ASSESSMENT template for the student to use for each exit quiz. Great for hallway and classroom display!

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Locate answers in the novel using page-specific text-evidence questions

  • Determine the meanings of words such as crate, bargain, shuffled, innocent, cellar, fond and stern from context clues

  • Recall and explain the key events of each chapter of Tornado

  • Self-assess by scoring each worksheet and quiz and tracking correct answers on the paw-print pad

Teaching tips

  • Give each exit quiz orally as a class or put the questions on the board — the teacher pages leave it to your discretion whether students may use the book

  • Print the short-answer page and paw-print assessment front and back so each chapter needs only one handout, as the packet's own note suggests

  • After grading, students color the numbered paw-print toes they answered correctly; the file suggests displaying the paws in the hallway or classroom

  • The exit-quiz questions deliberately differ from the worksheet questions, so both can run on the same chapter without repetition — students can even write their own quiz questions on spare paw-print pads

Skills covered

  • Text-evidence retrieval — every worksheet question sends students to a named page of the novel, such as finding why Emma Lou put the turtle on the porch on page 22.

  • Context-clue vocabulary — students decode one mystery word per chapter from a definition, its starting letter and letter-count blanks.

  • Listening comprehension — exit quizzes can be read aloud while students record answers on the paw-print pad.

  • Self-assessment — students circle their score on each worksheet and quiz and color the paw-print toes they got right.

Good to know

Questions teachers ask about this resource

How do the exit quizzes relate to the chapter worksheets?

Each chapter's four exit-quiz questions are entirely separate from its worksheet items — chapter 1's worksheet asks about the funnel cloud's direction and the hail, while its quiz asks about the nickname 'Link' and the month Pete's story began — so the quiz still works after the worksheet is done.

How does the paw-print answer pad work?

Two paw prints print per page and cut apart; students write the four quiz answers on the toes, circle the chapter and their score, and after grading color each numbered toe they answered correctly — the packet suggests displaying the finished paws.

Do students need the novel in hand to complete the work?

For the worksheets, yes — every question directs students to a specific page of Tornado to find the answer. For the exit quizzes, the teacher pages leave book use to your discretion.
